Asphalt Shingle Advancements
In more recent years, the options available for using an asphalt shingle have broadened outside of your standard shingle. If you prefer the appearance of a tile roof, there are shingle options that give the appearance of a natural tile and these come without the hefty price tag and risk of damage that a natural tile has.
Lifetime and Impact Resistant Roofing Shingles
There are a couple key factors involved in identifying the need for a replacement of an asphalt shingle roof:
- Shingles that are beginning to curl or crack. Depending on the extent will determine if a repair or replacement is most appropriate.
- Granules on the ground near the gutter downspouts indicate that the crushed pieces of stone are coming off the top of the shingles. These granules protect the shingle from the sun and heat exposure and with the absence of them, the durability of the shingle is compromised.
At Mastercraft we use Lifetime and Impact Resistant Roofing Shingles designed to resist damage from impact. The impact resistant shingles meet the most stringent standards for impact resistance which is Class 4 promulgated by Underwriters Laboratory (UL) and wind resistance set by both Underwriters Laboratory and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM International).
Synthetic Slate & Shake Shingles
SYNTHETIC SLATE AND SHAKE roofing products are comprised of composite materials that are virtually undisguisable from real slate or wood. This roofing system is less expensive and costs less to install than a real slate or wood roof. Composite shake and slate-like products come in multiple widths and colors, enabling homeowners to create blends with realistic textures and variations. A synthetic slate or shake roof provides the aesthetic appeal of real slate or wood products without the drawbacks like the risk of damage from impact and the high cost of material and installation. Composite roof products are lightweight, impact resistant, low maintenance, color fade resistant, wind resistant, and fire rated. This choice provides an exceptional value for any discerning homeowner.
Tile Roofing
TILE roofing has historically been a favorite choice both in warm and cold environments for homeowners. Modern manufacturers of both clay and concrete tiles have designed and engineered their products to have excellent field performance by enhancing the ventilation and water shredding capabilities of the material and system. One of the reasons tile roofing is attractive as a choice for homeowners is that the different colors, shapes, and sizes are abundant to suit any architectural style. The underlayment, flashing, and installation of the material are critical in protecting the longevity of a tile roof. Most typically it is the underlayment and flashing that are the prime cause of premature replacement, most significantly on older tile roofs. In some instances, we can remove the existing tile, replace all the underlayment and flashing and reinstall the old tile.
Stone Coated Steel
STONE COATED STEEL roofing products are designed for homeowners who want the performance advantages of a metal roofing system but the traditional style of tile, shake, or shingle roof. The traditional and distinctive style is reinforced with the strength and longevity of steel.
These products are made of aluminum and have a stone chip finish that resists fading and UV penetration. While with a standing seam metal roofing system, continuous panels run from the ridge of the roof all the way down the eaves and between the panels are seams connected by fasteners, with the stone coated steel roofing system used by Mastercraft the panels are smaller, interlocking and installed horizontally and fastened with screws.Although both are considered metal roofing systems, they have very different looks and curb appeal.
Standing Seam Metal
STANDING SEAM METAL roofing is becoming more popular in a residential setting for some homeowners. Although the cost of a standing seam metal roof is more expensive than other options, a metal roof is highly resistant to water, wind, hail, and the sun, hence, giving them great durability. Lighter color metal roofs reflect the ultraviolet rays and can help significantly with lower cooling costs. One advantage of a metal roof versus real tile or slate is that steel and aluminum are lightweight and there is no need for any additional structural support that is very likely required when installing a natural slate or tile roof.
